Julia Nesheiwat

Julia Nesheiwat is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Implementation in the Bureau of Energy Resources, where she has served since October 2011. Beginning in 2008-2011, Ms. Nesheiwat was the Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy. Immediately prior, she also served as the Energy Policy Advisor in the Department’s Economic bureau, where she focused on energy security issues for Europe and Central Asia. In 2010 to 2011, including the period following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Ms. Nesheiwat served as a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Fellow in Japan, where she conducted energy and economic policy research evaluating U.S. and Asian energy policies.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Nesheiwat was Chief of Staff for Policy and Planning at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where she worked on international energy security issues including nuclear power and non-proliferation issues. She has also served on the U.S. Presidential Commission on Intelligence Capabilities Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction, where she led the North Korea policy steering committee. A former military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, Ms. Nesheiwat served consecutive tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ms. Nesheiwat received a B.A. from Stetson University, an M.A. at Georgetown University, and is a Ph.D. candidate at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.
