John E. Peters, Senior Commercial Officer at the American Embassy in Tokyo, is a Career Minister-rank diplomat with the Commercial Service of the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. In 2007 Mr. Peters received the Presidential Rank Award for meritorious service.

Mr. Peters has had extensive service in Japan, both as Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the American Embassy in Tokyo, supervising six in-country commercial representations (1990-1994), and as Commercial Consul at the American Consulate General in Osaka (1986-90).


Prior to his return to Tokyo, Mr. Peters served as the Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the American Embassy in New Delhi (2003-2006) where he oversaw commercial representations in seven locations throughout India, the most extensive country-wide presence that the Department of Commerce has in any of its worldwide operations.


Mr. Peters was Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the American Embassy in Seoul (1999-2003). Mr. Peters also has served as Minister-Counselor at the American Embassy in Moscow (1995-1999), where he administered four U.S. government commercial representations and ten American Business Centers across Russia.


Before entering the U.S. Department of Commerce, Mr. Peters managed consulting firms retained by government agencies, multinationals, and small-medium sized businesses. Mr. Peters holds degrees in Japanese from San Francisco State University, in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii, and in Hotel Management from Paul Smiths College. He is a professional member of the Society for Human Resource Management. Mr. Peters speaks Japanese and Russian. Mr. Peters is married with three children.
